On Saturday 12th October expert mycologist Jesper Launder will be leading an exciting afternoon of mushroom foraging here in Sussex during which you will learn to identify many species of edible and medicinal fungi. The event will run from 11am until around 4pm. Guests must have their own transport as there may be some driving required as we travel between locations.
The day starts with an introduction to the world of mushroom foraging and some advice on responsible and sustainable foraging. We will then head out to see what we can find as we make our may through various habitats from mixed woodland to open grassland. This event is suitable for both beginners and seasoned mushroom foragers. We guarantee you will be returing home having learnt something new!
Later in the day we will head to a wild location for an outdoor fire-cooked feast. The spoils of our foraging efforts will be prepared as part of a unique tasting menu inspired by our journey through the autumnal landscape. Game season will be in full swing and the menu will feature wild meat such as venison, wild boar and pheasant.
We will be offering guests both ‘MEAT + FISH’ and a‘PLANT-BASED’ menu options. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate vegans. Local wines and wild cocktails will be paired with each dish. A non-alcoholic drinks pairing menu will also be available for the designated driver of the group.
We’ll be updating the menu nearer the time but please see below for an example menu (from last year)…
Participants will need to make their own way to the wild location. Free onsite parking will be provided. Full details of the location and travel advice will be provided once your booking has been confirmed.
Please bring along a basket and a mushroom knife if you have one. As we will be doing quite a bit of walking over the afternoon we recommend that you also bring along a few snacks and a flask of your favourite hot drink for the occasional energy boost! We are hoping for pleasant autumn weather (we were very lucky last year!) though please prepare for the opposite. Make sure you pack a warm layer, waterproof jacket and suitable outdoor footwear. This course is not suitable for children/under 18s.
